Pitalito-Huila is known as the municipality with the highest coffee production in Colombia and is where Edisson Vergara grows coffee with his family.
In 1993 at the age of 15, Edisson was enlisted without much choice, into the ranks of the FARC guerrilla group. In 1998 he was captured and then imprisoned for 19 years, for a crime he did not commit. “Prison is a school, if you want to follow bad steps there you can do it, but if you want to follow a path of good ironically you can also do it, you decide,” says Edisson, who chose the path to prove his innocence and that he could contribute positively to society. While in prison, Edisson finished high school and several courses to have the best possible job opportunities once freed.
After his release in 2017, he was awarded funding that allowed him to bet on a new chance at life by investing in his father’s farm and planting 22,000 coffee sticks. Today the La Sirena farm has 8 hectares of different varieties such as papaya, rosé bourbon, Castillo and Colombia. Growing exceptional quality coffee has become Edisson’s passion along with being an example to young people in the region.
